Pulau Dua or Isle of Two is located on the far eastern shores of central Sulawesi. This two small stony outcrops are just a few miles away from the shores of Balantak, a sleepy fishing village on the mainland. It is highly unlikely that you as a non Indonesian will ever visit Pulau Dua as it is not in any major tourist destinations. People visit to Luwuk to go to Ampana and then to the legendary Togian Islands. Being in Luwuk for over a month, i decided to visit this place with friends from Hotel Estrella.
From Luwuk it takes around 3 hrs by car to reach Balantak. The road goes along the coast for an hour with nice views of the shoreline. After this we pass through rice fields and hills in the horizon and small farming villages with old catholic Churches before entering the hills. The ride in the hills take around 1 1/2 hr and then we reach the other side and can see the Gulf of Tomini / Molucca Sea. While we rode the winding road in the green forest, we did notice some nice colorful birds. Looks like birding will be a great idea here.
From Balantak, we took a speed boat and in 5 minutes we reached Pulau Dua. The west side where we were dropped is calm and nice for snorkelling. The green hills of Balantak can be appreciated from here. The sand though is black on this side. To reach the other side, a climb on the colorful stairs is needed and then the views from top are awesome. The north side beach is full of corals and waves are big. It is not safe to swim here as the corals and rocks can hurt you. The South side is a bay and calm with lots of sea grass and nice for snorkeling.
There is no food in Pulau Dua. Ensure that you carry food and water. The cellphone works amazing on top of the island but does not work if you are in the beach. Overall we can say that Pulau Dua is a great destination for a day trip with snorkeling around the sea. Scuba diving is also possible in Pulau Dua.
